How to read this table
Range is usually stated at a specific target reflectivity, often 10% or 80%. Compare models at the same reflectivity, and use the low-reflectivity figure if your robot must detect dark objects or people in dark clothing.
Field of view decides how many sensors you need. A 360° mechanical or hemispherical unit can cover a mobile base alone; a forward-facing unit with a narrower field of view may need a second sensor for the rear or for close obstacles.
Point rate and frame rate describe how much data reaches your computer. Higher rates help mapping and fast motion but increase the processing and network load, so confirm that your compute module and Ethernet port can handle the stream.
Power, weight, IP rating and operating temperature matter on small and outdoor robots. Check the minimum detection distance as well: some long-range units cannot see objects close to the robot.
FAQ
Do I need a mechanical spinning LiDAR or a solid-state unit?
Mechanical units give a full 360° horizontal view from one sensor. Solid-state and non-repetitive scanning units have no large rotating parts and are compact, but usually cover a narrower field of view. Many mobile robots combine one of each.
Which software drivers are available?
Most manufacturers publish an SDK and a ROS or ROS 2 driver. State your operating system, ROS version and compute platform in the inquiry so the supplier can confirm driver support for the exact firmware.
How is time synchronisation handled?
Many units support IEEE 1588 (PTP) or GPS PPS synchronisation over Ethernet. If you fuse LiDAR with cameras or an IMU, confirm the supported method and the timestamp accuracy before ordering.
